ICT Disposals

If the computer up for disposal is a Curtin-owned computer, regardless of whether it is to be donated or disposed of in another manner, it must be wiped of existing Curtin applications, software and data. Please contact CITS ICT Procurement via email or log a job with the CITS Service Desk and we will assist you in this process.

If you plan to donate a computer, please consider:

  1. Am I allowed to donate the computer?
  2. Is the computer clean (of data, passwords, etc)?
  3. If it’s not eligible for the Guild, then what?

Am I allowed to donate the computer?

  • If the computer you wish to donate is your personal computer, and you wholly own it, then there is not an issue.
  • If the computer you wish to donate is a Curtin-owned computer
    • then you need to make sure you have appropriate permission. Check with your line manager, area head, head of school, etc.
    • Once approval have been given, please contact CITS ICT Procurement via email or log a job with the CITS Service Desk and we will assist you in this process.
  • If the computer you wish to donate is a Curtin-leased computer, then the answer is no, as the University cannot donate leased computers - at the end of the lease it must be returned to the finance company that owns them.

Is the computer clean (of data, passwords, etc)?

If you are disposing of a computer, any computer, the hard drive needs to be cleaned properly. To properly sanitise a hard drive, simply formatting it will not be enough, as programs can recover some data from formatted drives.

  • If the computer is a personally owned computer, CITS recommends you prepare your hard drive for disposal before disposing of the computer. There are many tools available for this (Google “Prepare Your Hard Drive For Disposal”).
  • If the computer is a Curtin-owned or Curtin-leased computer, please contact CITS ICT Procurement via email or log a job with the CITS Service Desk and we will assist you in this process.

If it’s not eligible for donating, then what?

If the computer is too old to be donated (for an example see the Guild’s email and their minimum specifications) then follow the instructions below:

  • If the computer is a personal owned computer, you can bring it to the next e-waste collection - please contact greencampus@curtin.edu.au for further information (next collection date, location, etc).
  • If the computer is a Curtin-owned computer, please contact CITS ICT Procurement via email or log a job with the CITS Service Desk and we will assist you in this process.
  • Note: If the computer is a Curtin-leased computer, then at the end of the lease it must be returned to the finance company that owns them.
